a number of issues, most of them inevitably controversial,
concerning the relationship of ethics and aesthetics (if the two
can really be viewed as separate terms) in contemporary literary
and critical discourses. If, according to Zygmunt Bauman, modern
culture can be seen as a "huge and never stopping factory of
permanence",1 then the contemporary criticism of that permanence,
regardless of its post-whatever denomination, can be said to be
taking up that permanence as a motif to be thought about in a
variety of contexts and in a variety of its significations:
stability, fixity, reliability, durability. Evaluation of
permanence is always both ethical and aesthetic; things
unchangeable, traditionally, are solid, good and, say, elegant —
like a Rolls Royce, for example, an unbreakable vehicle of comfort
and easy transportation. Extended to more eschatological terms,
permanence has become a model for a living in which immortality has
become an ideal strongly opposed to the impermanence and sinfulness
of mundane sauntering.The topography of that sauntering is
delineated by John Gilliver and Małgorzata Nitka ("The Place of
Reading") who view reading as a space of hospitality, an instable
space of a constant and mutual negotiation between inside and
outside, between movement and destination, between reading and
misreading. The latter concept is looked at by Wojciech Kalaga
("(Mis-) Reading — Ethos — Logos") who questions the idea of
permanence of reading and interpretation in the light of Richard
Rorty's stance of interpretive pluralism, a proposal which
questions the possibility of extracting a universally valid meaning
of a text and makes each (mis)reading a matter of facing some
ethical choices, a matter of awareness of one's being involved in
the inevitable productive recognition of an existential paradox.
Similarly, on the basis ofZawarte w niniejszym tomie artykuły
proponują zastanowienie się nad nieuniknionym, choć częstokroć
kontrowersyjnym, związkiem między etyką a estetyką we współczesnym
literaturoznawstwie i w dyskursie krytycznym. O ile kulturę
nowoczesną da się postrzegać jako "potężną i niepowstrzymaną
fabrykę trwałości", to współczesna krytyka tej trwałości,
niezależnie od jej post- czy też po-jakiejkolwiek denominacji,
podejmuje kwestię owej permanencji jako motyw wielorakich i
wielokontekstowych przemyśleń dotyczących także ta-kich zagadnień,
jak: stabilność, niezmienność, jednoznaczność czy
nieśmiertelność.Ocena trwałości jest zawsze oceną etyczną i
jednocześnie estetyczną. Rzeczy nie-zmienne tradycyjnie są związane
z takimi atrybutami, jak solidność i elegancja, są to przedmioty
"dobre". W kategoriach nieco bardziej eschatologicznych trwałość
stała się modelem życia, w którym panującym ideałem jest różnorako
rozumiana nieśmiertelność, stanowiąca opozycję w stosunku do
nietrwałości i grzesznej wieloznaczności codziennego bytowania.spis
