literatur innych niż francuska (z literatury polskiej, rosyjskiej,
rumuńskiej, niemieckiej, angielskiej, włoskiej, kanadyjskiej,
latynoamerykańskiej).Historical Novel in the History of the Novel
SummaryHistorical novel occupies a special place in the history of
the novel. Earlier, quite timid attempts to popularise that genre
have not succeeded and it was not before the success of Walter
Scott's novels that in fact all great writers of the 19th century
Europe got interested in that type of writing. Therefore it does
come as a surprise that historical novel spread around the whole
continent and developed in an amazing way. It is true that the
atmosphere of Romanticism, whose programme referred to national and
folk past, and even to specific folklore, was conductive of that.
It can be seen clearly on the example of the French historical
novel, which in many cases became a model for the writers for
whomFrancewas an unattainable model of art, literature included.The
world presented in historical novel is a specific one. For literary
fiction remains here in the frame of the non-existing, supposedly
true, past. Therefore it is full of specific exotics based on
different, more or less reliable sources, but that is insignificant
here. That world appeals to the contemporary knowledge and
experiences as well as emotions, giving them colours frequently
taken from the long gone past. It creates a specific vision of the
world and the individual's lot, simultaneously being a picture of
